How I Harness My Morning Energy to Build My Dream Business: A Guide for Women Entrepreneurs Balancing a 9-to-5
Hey Friends,
In today’s manifesto, we explore how to reclaim your most productive time and channel it toward building your dream business. If you’re juggling a 9-to-5 while trying to grow your own venture, you may feel a familiar struggle: when the workday is done, you're left with little to no energy for what truly excites you. That’s where mornings come in, and I want to share how recognizing my morning energy helped me completely shift the way I approach my business.
Let me start by saying mornings are my thing. I adore them. In fact, I named my company Mornings Like This because of how deeply mornings resonate with me. For me, it’s more than just an early start—it’s the joy of sitting on my balcony with a warm coffee, watching the sun rise while ducks glide by. It’s a moment of stillness, of presence, of feminine flow, which sets the tone for my entire day. But more than just a calming ritual, I’ve realized mornings are when I’m at my most productive.
I used to feel guilty about not having the energy to work on my business after coming home from my 9-to-5. You know the feeling—you’ve got a head full of ideas during the day, but by the time you clock out, those ideas have faded into exhaustion. I'd sit at my desk, staring blankly at my laptop, knowing I had so much to give, but not the energy to follow through. But then I realized something important: I didn’t need to wait until the evening to work on my business. I had already done so in the morning.
Discovering Your Power Time
We often hear about early birds and night owls, and the notion that productivity is tied to waking up at 5 a.m. or grinding until the middle of the night. The truth is, it’s all about finding your time—the time when your energy is at its peak, and you feel in alignment. For me, it’s always been the mornings. Maybe for you, it’s different. But if you can tap into the window of time where you feel the most energized, you can begin to shape your schedule in a way that serves your business—and yourself.
If you're in a 9-to-5, there may be times you feel like you have no control over your schedule. I felt that way for a long time. But then I started waking up earlier, not because I was told it was the “right” thing to do, but because it felt good. Between 5:30 and 8:00 a.m., I found my sweet spot for working on my business. I would do a few hours of focused work, then head into my job knowing I’d already made progress on my goals.
Changing My Mindset: Quality Over Quantity
One of the biggest mindset shifts I had to make was realizing that the amount of time you spend working on your business isn’t as important as the quality of that time. I used to think I had to grind for hours after work, squeezing in tasks whenever possible. But I wasn’t being kind to myself, and I wasn’t acknowledging the work I’d already done. In truth, the time I spent in the morning—energized and excited—was far more effective than the time I spent dragging myself to my desk in the evening.
Now, I give myself permission to stop. To rest. To acknowledge that I’ve already poured into my business in the morning, and it’s okay if I don’t have the energy to do more in the evening.
Honoring My Feminine Flow
This realization ties into something deeper for me—moving from my feminine energy. There’s an unspoken pressure in entrepreneurship, especially for women, to constantly hustle and “do more.” But what I’ve come to learn is that feminine energy thrives on flow, joy, and pleasure. It’s about doing what feels good, not what we feel obligated to do.
For me, working on my business in the mornings feels aligned with my natural flow. It’s the time when I feel the most joyful, creative, and ready to bring my ideas to life. By honoring this energy, I’ve been able to create a sustainable rhythm that doesn’t drain me. Instead, it energizes me and makes the rest of my day feel lighter—even my 9-to-5.
Setting Boundaries with Your 9-to-5
Let’s talk about the job. It’s easy to feel like you need to give everything to your 9-to-5, but if your dream is to build your business, you need to start setting boundaries. I’m not suggesting that you slack off or neglect your responsibilities, but it’s important to recognize that your job doesn’t have to be the center of your universe.
I do exactly what I’m hired to do, but I no longer go above and beyond. Why? Because I’m not trying to move up in my company. My priority is my business, and I need to save my energy for that. This might sound harsh to some, but I see it as reclaiming my power and focus. I’m not giving more than I need to because I have something else that’s more important to me—my business, my future.
Creating a Morning Routine for Your Business
If you’re like me and you find that mornings are your power time, it’s worth creating a routine that sets you up for success. Here’s what has worked for me:
Prepare the Night Before: Lay out everything you need—whether it’s your laptop, journal, or task list—so you can jump right into work when you wake up. The less you have to think about in the morning, the better.
Create a Morning Ritual: Start with something that brings you joy. For me, it’s sitting on my balcony with a cup of coffee, enjoying the sunrise. Maybe for you, it’s a short meditation, a cup of tea, or a few minutes of journaling.
Set Clear Goals: Know what you want to accomplish in your morning work session. I usually pick one or two key tasks that will move my business forward and focus on those.
Stop When You’re Done: It’s easy to keep going and push yourself, but remember that quality work is better than burnout. When you’ve hit your goal for the morning, give yourself permission to stop.
Giving Yourself Grace
I’ll leave you with this: be kind to yourself. If you’re working a 9-to-5 while building your business, you’re doing something remarkable. But that doesn’t mean you have to be “on” all the time. Embrace the time when you feel your best, whether that’s in the morning, afternoon, or evening. And don’t forget to rest. Rest is just as important as work when it comes to growing something beautiful.
