Unlocking Your True Self: How Reconnecting with Pleasure Can Transform Your Life
Hey Friends!
I had a conversation with a friend the other day, and like most good friends do, she asked, “What’s going on with you? Tell me everything.” As I began to unpack what’s been swirling around in my mind, I realized that lately, my entire focus has been on reconnecting with myself—my mind, body, and spirit. This might sound a little selfish at first glance, right? I’m not thinking about my kids, my job, my business, or even my house. It’s just me, myself, and I.
But here’s the interesting thing—when I focus on myself, the relationships I value and the things that matter to me become clearer. When I pour into my own cup, I have more to give to others. So, byproduct or not, as I reconnect with myself, I find myself naturally paying attention to my kids, my job, and my home in a more intentional way. It’s like a ripple effect, but it all starts from within.
What Does Reconnecting Even Mean?
Right now, I’m in a season of unscripting my life—shedding the old, questioning what still holds meaning, and choosing what comes with me as I move forward. I’m meeting myself again, discovering what truly brings me pleasure, and living from that space.
If you’ve been following my blog, you’ll know that this whole journey started because I was feeling out of sorts. I’ve been navigating this weird but wonderful terrain of figuring out who I am now. Not who I was five months or five years ago, but right now. And let me tell you, it’s a thrilling ride.
I’ve realized that while many of my core beliefs and values remain the same, the way I express and live them needs to change. My belief in identity, for instance, is still rock solid. I believe that the identity you live in shapes your reality—if you believe you are, then you are. But how I interact with that belief is evolving. Right now, I’m less about teaching others this concept and more about living it, exploring it for myself.
Shifting Identities and Embracing Change
In this new space, I’m moving away from building a business that drains me to asking myself: Is this bringing me pleasure? Is this nourishing my mind, body, and soul? This shift has made all the difference. I’m not trying to hustle my way to success anymore; I’m designing a life and business that feels good—that feels aligned.
I recently had another conversation with a friend where we talked about the “100K question”—you know, the one that asks, If you had 100K coming in every month on autopilot with ease, what would you be doing with your time? For me, the answer is writing. I’d be hopping from one beautiful Airbnb to the next, staying in cute inns, bed and breakfasts, and five-star hotels, writing my heart out. It’s not so much about the destination as it is about the experience and the pleasure of doing what lights me up.
When I posed this question to my friend, her immediate response was all about making money and building a business. And don’t get me wrong, I get it. As entrepreneurs, we often equate success with financial gain. But the whole point of the question is to remove the pressure of money and focus on what brings you joy now. When you take money off the table, what would you do just for the pleasure of doing it?
Dressing Up Pleasure
This exploration of pleasure has even made me more intentional about how I show up in the world—right down to how I dress. Some days I feel fancy and want to dress up. Other days, I’m all about cargo pants and my favorite Pumas. And guess what? That’s okay. I’m embracing the fact that I don’t need to have one specific “look” or be known for one particular style. What I’m known for is change, and I’m learning to be okay with that.
This extends to my decision to wear or not wear my hijab. After a lot of reflection, I realized that the reason I love wearing it is because I want to be recognized as a Muslim by other Muslim women. That connection is something I deeply miss, and wearing my hijab allows me to feel that sense of belonging. But I’ve also given myself permission to unscript this too—to wear it when I feel like it and take it off when I don’t.
The Pleasure of Being Unscripted
So, what’s bringing you pleasure? If you’re feeling out of sorts, I bet you haven’t reconnected with what lights you up. This is your invitation to explore what brings you joy, without judgment or guilt. You’ll find that when you live from a space of pleasure, it ripples out and touches every part of your life.
Living in pleasure doesn’t mean neglecting your responsibilities. In fact, when you prioritize what feels good to you, you’ll naturally make choices that benefit not only you but everyone around you. Think of it like this: when you’re living in joy, the people around you will feel it. Happy people tend to spread happiness. Happy people make people happy, just like miserable people make people miserable.
At the end of the day, it all comes down to unscripting your life. Unlearning the expectations that have been placed on you and re-learning who you truly are. That’s where the magic happens.
Here’s to living a life unscripted.
