Hey Friend!
In this manifesto, we are throwing out the myth that Black women must always be strong, productive, and self-sacrificing. Instead, we are embracing softness, joy, and intentional living—on our own terms.
Black women have always known how to create comfort, warmth, and community. But let’s be real: the world doesn’t always make it easy for us to prioritize ourselves. We’re praised for our resilience but rarely given space to rest. We’re expected to hold it all together but never encouraged to simply be.
But guess what, sis? You deserve a life that feels good.
That’s where Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) comes in.
What is Hygge? (And Why Black Women Need It Now More Than Ever)
Hygge is a Danish concept that describes a feeling of warmth, comfort, and deep contentment. It’s about slowing down, savoring life’s small joys, and creating spaces that nurture rather than drain you.
For Black women, embracing Hygge is more than just adding a cozy blanket to your couch—it’s about reclaiming ease, rest, and softness as acts of self-preservation.
How to Infuse Hygge Into Your Life (Without Overhauling Everything)
You don’t need a luxury home, a big budget, or aesthetic perfection to live a soft life. You just need to be intentional.
1. Romanticize Your Everyday Life
✨ Use your good candle on a random Tuesday.
✨ Put on a playlist and make your shower feel like a ritual.
✨ Sip your morning tea slowly, as if it’s a sacred moment.
Black women are often told to grind, hustle, and keep pushing. But what if you slowed down and let yourself enjoy the little things?
2. Create Daily Rituals That Feel Luxurious (Without Spending a Dime)
Your rituals don’t have to be fancy—they just have to feel good to you.
🕊️ Skincare as Self-Care: I have a nightly ritual of using reusable makeup remover pads and rosewater—not just to cleanse my skin, but to be with myself.
💧 Infused Water for Intentional Living: Depending on my mood, I make a batch of infused water that aligns with what my body needs. (Psst… I wrote an entire book about this! The Black Girl’s Little Black Book of Infused Water—grab it here.)
🌿 Nature as a Reset Button: Some days, I just sit on my balcony and watch the ducks, cranes, and turtles in the pond. No phone. No distractions. Just me, being present.
3. Set Boundaries (Because Peace is Non-Negotiable)
Let’s talk about the biggest act of self-care: protecting your peace.
For me, I had to learn how to communicate my needs when it came to gatherings, friendships, and even family. I’m not anti-social—I just need alone time to recharge.
Your boundaries might look like:
🚫 Not answering texts after 9 PM
🚫 Saying no to energy-draining events
🚫 Unfollowing accounts that make you feel less than
You don’t owe anyone an explanation. Your peace? That’s priority #1.
